My Cup Runneth Over

“So, what did you do this weekend?” I often ask my patients on a Monday.  As I’ve mentioned before, I love to hear about what people are up to and what makes them tick; the “people part” is the most enjoyable part of my job.

When patients returned the question back to me, I found myself saying that I had a “low-key weekend.”  “It was quiet,” I’d say, “we didn’t get up to much,” or “there was lots of downtime.”  And yet, when I replay my weekend it was anything but quiet:

  • I ran 18km with one of my best friends at 6:00am on Saturday morning.
  • I worked until 1:00pm on Saturday afternoon.
  • I snuggled with my kids and watched a movie on the couch.
  • We went to our dear friend’s for dinner on Saturday night.
  • We went to church on Sunday morning.
  • We went apple and pumpkin picking on Sunday afternoon.
  • I sorted and purged both kid’s closets, dressers, and bookshelves.
  • We did some Fall planting and yard cleanup.
  • We watched all three Jays games on the edge of our seats.

Throw in some laundry, some food prep, and some housecleaning, and it was a full, busy weekend.  So how is it that I feel so refreshed and rejuvenated?  I think it’s because I love to do all of these things (minus the housecleaning).  Find what you love to do.  Do it.  That’s the trick.  A happy life is built upon time well spent.

My daughter’s Kindergarten class has been talking lately about the concept of “bucket filling” and “bucket dumping.”  Bucket fillers are people (and things) that make you feel good and content, while bucket dumpers are people (and things) that make you feel bad.  She excitedly tells us about the bucket filling tickets she earns at school by cleaning up, helping a friend, and sharing.  She’s proud of those tickets, and she’s learning to be a bucket filler herself and hang around with others who fill her bucket.

My bucket was filled up this weekend.  “My cup runneth over,” I texted my friend after our early Saturday run, and it’s true.  I’m full of gratitude for the life I have, contentment for the life I’ve built, and happiness for the life I live.  I’ve had this image saved on my phone for weeks, and I finally get to use it today:

One of “those people”

Do you have one of “those people” in your lives?  One of those people who believes in you and supports you through all of your choices?  One of those people who has known you from the very beginning, and has helped to influence and shape your life for the better?  One of those people who you have a connection with, who is your cheerleader, with whom you feel stronger at their side?  I had one of “those people” come and visit me last week.  It was my Auntie Carol.  And today is her birthday.

Auntie Carol lives in Alberta, and has not been to visit me for seven years, when she surprised me for my baby shower in 2008.  But I see her at least once a year, when we head West, and we are in frequent communication over email.  She holds such a special place in my heart, and I thought I’d take this public opportunity to share that with all of you.

We took her down to the lake, out for dinner, and to play laser tag.  We went for walks, went for brunch, and went to the library.  We hung pictures on my walls, made my new house feel like home, we laughed and ate cookies.  We had a few chiropractic treatments, a busy four days, and not nearly enough time.  It was wonderful and nostalgic and loving, and it filled up my heart.

Catch your Breath

There’s something about a day of puttering around home that really makes my heart sing.  Sunday was a day of exactly that, and now I feel like my world is back to spinning on its proper axis.

Life has changed a lot for me in the past couple of weeks, mostly centered around the move that I’ve been blabbering on about.  Add to that the back-to-school chaos that we’ve all experienced, and I’ve felt very out of balance lately; I seemingly haven’t been able to catch my breath.  But there were several things that helped me catch it this weekend.  The first of those things being friends.

I competed in a CrossFit competition on Saturday afternoon.  It was an all-female event comprised of teams of three, and there were more than one hundred women involved; nearly half of that hundred were members of my gym.  The event raised money for Love the Snatch, a cervical cancer foundation started by someone gone far too soon.  I spent the afternoon cheering, chatting, laughing, and sweating.  And when I left, my heart was full and smiling.  Can hearts smile?  Yep.  They can, and they do.


And then there’s my Sunday.  Some IKEA assembly for my work-with-my-hands side, some country music for my feels-like-home side, some coffee for my I-love-coffee side, and heaps upon heaps of family time for my this-is-what-life-is-about side.

And so, my friends, the world continues to turn, doesn’t it?  Even when change is happening fast and furious. Even when we can’t catch our breath.   And when balance is restored and my breath has been caught, these guys are always there to go for a walk or read books or help me make dinner, and make me feel right back to normal.
